TAFE Queensland students to give Games athletes the golden treatment

Two TAFE Queensland Gold Coast students have created the winning design for what will be one of the most popular outlets in the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Village, the Hair and Beauty Salon.

GOLDOC briefed 20 Diploma Interior Design and Diploma Building Design students studying at the Coomera campus and gave them the task of designing a salon that features Massage, Manicure and Pedicure, Haircuts, Hair braiding, Microdermabrasion, Lash Tinting and Brow Styling spaces.

Five finalist groups were shortlisted and were required to present to a panel of experts with the eventual winners Diploma Building Design student Chad Becker and Diploma Interior Design student Garnet Evans awarded the winning design called Salon XXI.

Garnet said the opportunity for students to participate in the creation and development of a space within the Games Village as part of their course curriculum was invaluable.

“Live project experiences such as the Hair and Beauty Salon provide a learning atmosphere that integrates classroom teachings with a hands-on approach,” said Garnet.

“The quality of teaching and course content prepared us with the skills and knowledge needed to complete this large scale project.”
Executive Director for Education and Training, Lee Russell said TAFE Queensland has a long and proud history of providing students with practical learning experiences.

“Partnering with the Games is another way in which TAFE Queensland continues to Make Great Happen for our students, by enabling them to do extraordinary things in front of a global audience,” said Ms Russell.

“This is just one of many exciting Games-related opportunities TAFE Queensland students from across the state are currently working on.

“For our students to know that their work will provide a more positive and healthy experience for the Athletes, Team Officials, International Media, Royalty, Heads of State and Dignitaries who visit the salon is something they can take with them for the rest of their lives.

Head of Village Operations, GOLDOC, Fiona Connor said, “Our work with TAFE Queensland is delivering great outcomes for students by providing opportunities to develop skills and put their learnings into action.

“The winning design is extremely impressive and I congratulate the students involved. During the Games, Salon XXI, will be staffed by students and will no doubt be a real talking point for Games athletes.”

Lendlease will now complete Salon XXI’s build and a number of other retail outlets will open up during Games time with a general store, Tourism Information Centre, Optus phone store and several other exciting stores to create a home away from home for athletes.

The Games Village will open its doors to the best athletes from the 70 nations and territories of the Commonwealth and their team officials from 25 March 2018.
