The Magic of Film

If you’ve ever considered a career in the movies, then making your own film at Village Roadshow Studios has to be the ultimate. Ethan Abraham attended a film making camp during the school holidays with New York Film Academy Australia after winning a competition through the Gold Coast Careers Festival.
The year 11 Merrimac High School student says he first began experimenting with film a few years ago.
“Up until now it’s really just been a hobby, going out into the street and making little films with people I know. I guess you’d call them cinematic montages. This week I’ve gained a much better understanding all of the facets of film making,” says Ethan.
The first few days of the NYFA Australia Film Making Camp focused on technique, today the students are at Village Roadshow Studios putting their theory into action and Ethan couldn’t wait to get the cameras rolling.
“I made a thriller today from an idea I had. We story boarded the concept, did the camera shots and directed the actors. Later I’ll edit the film and then at the end of the camp we’ll screen the films we created.”
Ethan says he was a bit nervous coming into the camp not knowing what to expect, but he needn’t have been. “Everyone has been so helpful and friendly and of course all the students here love film like I do, so it’s been awesome to share this experience with them.
Winning the Competition
“When I entered the competition I saw the post on Instagram and I thought this is exactly what I want to do. I went to the Careers Festival and spoke to the people from NYFA Australia which gave me a much better idea of what the school is about and the courses you can do there. It’s now at the top of my list of where I want to study after I graduate from school.”
Ethan still hasn’t decided whether he wants to be an editor or a director, but this week has only made him more excited about a career in film.
“Imagine watching a movie and it’s your work being played up on the screen, everyone there has bought tickets to see your movie and you’re creating an experience by taking them inside your world - that’s magic!”
