Southport Sharks have shown a commitment to supporting and enhancing the student experience on the Gold Coast over a number of years. From facilitating unique Australian sporting experiences with our international students and creating opportunities for them to integrate into the local community, to the club’s undergraduate programs for interns and job opportunities for local graduates.

The club provides undergraduate work placements in conjunction with Griffith University by giving students an opportunity to participate in a program that assists in preparing them for future roles in the hospitality industry. With a diverse range of working disciplines across the organisation students are exposed to numerous facets of hospitality industry, including reception, gaming, bars and dining.

Barry Fraser, the Lecturer and Work Integrated Learning Convenor at Griffith University’s Department of Tourism, Sport and Hotel Management says:

“The Southport Sharks program provides students with an invaluable opportunity to link theory with practice. The students benefit by being able to rotate around several key areas of the Club, where they can begin to develop a range of skills. We look forward to the opportunity to work with the Club again in the future.”

International undergraduate student Qingyu (Amy) Zhu was impressed not only by gaining workplace experience, but also the culture within the club:

“Working at Southport Sharks was a great experience for me. The work environment is very good, everyone is sunny and active. I was happy working with my colleagues, and their willingness to help me learn more knowledge of the job. The two-month placement included learning about four positions – gaming attendant, bar attendant, receptionist, and food & beverage attendant in Carmody’s fine dining restaurant.”

Southport Sharks’ work integrated learning internships are part of the club’s commitment to the wider community. One person to benefit from the program was fourth year Griffith Business School student Kayla Malss, who gained experience with the Shark’s marketing team.

Kayla says of the opportunity: “My ten week internship at Southport Sharks gave me valuable experience I simply couldn’t gain anywhere else. I was lucky to have the support of a very strong and helpful marketing team, who taught me a vast range of skills – from office etiquette to software applications.”

Marketing Manager Andrew Zurcas was so impressed with Kayla’s work ethic and willingness to learn that he offered her an ongoing position within the Shark’s marketing department.

Southport Sharks CEO Dean Bowtell says that creating opportunities for local students is vital for the future success of his club and the city.

“As the Gold Coast grows and matures, the demand for talent will increase across all industries. Southport Sharks recognises the importance of recruiting skilled workers as a critical factor for meeting our short and long-term business objectives. Our students of today, are our future leaders who will shape and influence the future of the Gold Coast.”
