App Gets Gamers Moving And Wins Top Tech Award

Saint Stephens College has taken out the top prize in the 2019 Mayor’s Telstra Technology Awards. Top Binzzz is an app designed to attract gamers into playing physical sport and athletes to become better at sport by utilizing technology. Saint Stephens students Kaveendra Dissabandara, Zachary Haywood and Samara Lowie developed their idea because they wanted to see obesity rates drop through more physical exercise and to enhance their sporting prowess through the use of the latest technology. When asked what set their idea apart Zac answered: “simplicity of design was the key.”
Ten teams from schools across the Gold Coast were chosen as finalists, all of them pitching their concepts to a panel of judges. The Southport School was runner up for the second year running with their team Skin ML pitching a skin cancer detection app.
Top Binzzz Takes Out Top Place
The Awards are now in their 6th year and the competition and are open to all Gold Coast high school students from years 9 – 12. The ten finalist teams receive mentoring and undertake a series of workshops to help develop and market their concept. It is a requirement of the competition that each entry must present a technological solution to a real world problem.
High Entry Standard
The competition sets such a high standard that the entries never fail to impress the judges. Other concepts this year included a drone to remove plastic waste from our oceans (Kings College); an app that prevents food wastage while reducing methane emissions (Aquinas College); and Medic Aid, a software program the tracks and redistributes medical supplies for optimum usage.
The Mayor’s Telstra Technology Awards are conducted by Study Gold Coast in partnership with Telstra, Bond University and Startup Apprentice.
