Farewell to the Class of 2022
17 Nov 2022
This week the 2022 Mayor’s Student Ambassadors met in the Gold Coast Student Hub one last time with the official close of this year’s program. There were lots of smiles, laughs and a few tears as the Ambassadors and the Study Gold Coast team reflected on the accomplishments of the group and the individual achievements of this exceptional cohort of students.
Every student who has participated in this program knows all too well the extraordinary bonds that are forged through the shared experience and the responsibilities that are part of being a Mayor’s Student Ambassador. This year presented its own particular challenges, with several students arriving just after our international borders reopened before taking the plunge into the unknown as an Ambassador, often finding themselves out of their comfort zone.
Immensely rewarding
It's the unique experiences offered through the program, many of which are facilitated by professional mentors, that really shape our Ambassadors. To witness their personal and professional growth through these exclusive opportunities is both wondrous, and immensely rewarding.
During the final session many of the Ambassadors spoke of the satisfaction of reaching their personal goals within the program, from developing a better understanding of what it means to be a leader, to the enhancement of their presentation and communication skills. In addressing her peers, Brazilian student Luisa Coelho Pinheiro delivered a heartfelt appreciation of her experience. "If it wasn’t for the Mayor’s Student Ambassador Program I would never have had the self-confidence to stand up before you as I am now to tell you how grateful I am to be able to share my feelings with you in English,'" she said.
Personal experience
Study Gold Coast’s Student Engagement Coordinator Ken Dinh, a former Mayor’s Student Ambassador himself, thanked this year’s cohort for their commitment to the program and the high level of engagement the 2022 Ambassadors had invested into the wider Gold Coast community.
In presenting the Ambassadors with their farewell packs, Ken included a personalised gift of a book, each carefully chosen to reflect the unique interests and talents of the recipient respectively. It was a touching moment for all, and a reminder that the program is very much a personal journey designed to develop a deeper understanding of self by bringing out the best in each participant depending on their aspirations.
While there is always some sadness associated with the closing of the program for a particular group, the new year will once again see a fresh cohort taking up this once in a lifetime opportunity to grow and evolve in ways they never imagined while exploring all that the Gold Coast has to offer.
