Student Grant Provides Peace of Mind
30 Nov 2022
Laura Caballero is a qualified graphic designer from Bogota, but never had the opportunity to work as a designer because she wasn’t able to gain the essential work experience to get a job in what is a highly competitive employment market there. She ended up working in a call centre for a communications company instead.
With very few prospects in Colombia Laura began to consider study options overseas and the Gold Coast was recommended as an ideal destination by a number of education agents who talked about the city’s opportunities and great lifestyle.
Financial help
Laura began researching the Gold Coast on the internet and was impressed with what she discovered. Then when she heard about Study Gold Coast’s travel grant for international students Laura applied in the hope that she would be successful.
“When I was told I’d received the travel grant I was very shocked. It’s taken a lot of pressure off me because I was worried that I would have to find a job as soon as I arrived, but it’s allowed me to pay the rent up front and a little time to settle in here first. It’s given me real peace of mind and I’m very grateful for that. It’s been very helpful to me,” she said.

Warm welcome
Coming from a colder environment Laura is really enjoying the temperate Gold Coast climate and the sunny disposition of the local population.
“I really like the weather here, in Bogota it’s very cold. The people are also very friendly here, it’s different from what I expected. It’s also a very multicultural and inclusive city where people from anywhere are accepted. I feel very comfortable here.”
Laura will be studying English at Imagine Education for the next six months and then move on to other areas of study.
“I want to study hospitality and commercial cookery and learn more about the industry,” she says. “After all these years I’ve decided I want to keep graphic design more as a hobby. I’d eventually like to set up my own business here, like a restaurant, and if possible, I’d like to stay here for a very long time.”
