TAFE STUDENTS LEARN THE BACKBONES OF BROADCASTING

TAFE Queensland Gold Coast students undertaking studies in Screen and Media and Sound Production have been given the opportunity to get hands on experience in the broadcasting environment with NEP.

NEP provides the technology to produce the world’s biggest live broadcast events and will be the Host Broadcaster for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Current students are working alongside industry professionals at numerous events on the Gold Coast, giving them real world experience in a fast paced environment.

Gerry O’Leary, Head of Broadcast Training Program at NEP, talked TAFE students through role descriptions and opportunities available, pre, during and post 2018.

“NEP’s Host Broadcast Training Program provides students with a fantastic opportunity to learn from industry professionals in a real broadcast environment. Hands-on practical experience is key to being job-ready in live broadcasting”, said Ms O’Leary.

On Saturday 5 March, two lucky students, Sam Thomas and Nicholas Munday gained invaluable work experience at the Titans vs. Roosters game at Cbus stadium.

Both students were able to shadow industry professionals as they broadcast the game live across television networks.

Screen and Media student Sam Thomas said the experience was amazing and seeing everything first hand was incredible.

“I was totally in awe of how everything worked, watching the broadcast team in action was very enlightening and it cemented my choice in careers,” said Thomas.

The partnership is supporting students to expand skills and experiences through work placements at outside broadcast events throughout Queensland. These opportunities will assist in building the workforce necessary to broadcast the 2018 Commonwealth Games to an international audience.
