TYPES OF ENGLISH COURSES

Language schools offer different types of courses to suit the different needs of learners. Whether you have a previous knowledge of the language or a specific reason for learning English, you will find a course that suits.

GENERAL ENGLISH

This is the most common course offered by education providers. It's a good option for people wanting to learn, practice or improve their English abilities. From basic conversations to advanced written and verbal communication, this course would help you to achieve your English goals.

ENGLISH FOR ACADEMIC PURPOSES (EAP)

If you are planning to enrol in higher level education like university where English is necessary, this course could be a good option. Its structure helps students to successfully develop their skills in an academic context. One of its advantages is that it trains students in the vocabulary specific to different areas of study.

EXAMINATION PREPARATION

This type of course has been designed to help those undertaking an internationally recognised English test like IELTS, Cambridge or TOEFL. In Australia, the most common and widely recognised is the IELTS test.

IELTS TEST

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is design to measure and classify the language proficiency of people wanting to study, work or migrate to an English speaking country.

The test evaluates 4 individual categories or components: reading, listening, writing and speaking. The results are presented in averaged band scores on a scale from 1 (the lowest) to 9 (the highest or expert). The minimum score you need to accomplish would be established by the organisation who has requested the test.

There are two types of tests to choose from depending on your objectives; these are the academic test and the general test.

ACADEMIC IELTS TEST

If you want to undertake higher education studies or qualify for a certain employment opportunity, the academic IELTS test would be the best choice. According to the IELTS organisation, this test assesses whether you are ready to begin studying or training in an environment where English is the primary language used.

GENERAL IELTS TEST

If an institution hasn’t required you to provide an academic test and you are taking a test for non-specific purposes, the general IELTS test would be your best option. According to the IELTS organisation developers, this test focuses on basic survival skills in broad social and workplace contexts.

It is a good idea to contact the organisation that has required you to sit the test so you can make sure you choose the correct one. Both of them are assessed in different levels of complexity, which could impact your final results.
