SOUTHERN CROSS UNIVERSITY INCREASINGLY POPULAR WITH INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

International students are flocking to Southern Cross University’s Gold Coast campus at an increasing rate, says Vice President (Global) Monty Singh. He attributes the ‘huge increase’ in overseas postgraduate numbers for the second session of 2018 to new program offerings and successful campaigns in new regions.

Mr Singh also believes the incredible location of university’s Gold Coast campus, just 400m from North Kirra beach and next to the Gold Coast Airport, is a big drawcard for overseas students.

“Southern Cross University’s Gold Coast campus is very popular with international students and we will see a significant increase in the international student cohort again this year. Our main international student markets include China and South Asian countries such as Nepal and India,” he says.

“The majority of our overseas applicants are enrolling on campus rather than online, and although there has been a small increase in the international interest in online courses, studying on campus still remains the more attractive and preferable option.

“It’s a very exciting time in the international student space. As the government introduces a cap on domestic student places there is intense competition to attract more international students. We are actively pursuing new cohorts of international students to bring diversification to the region.”

International Influence
Mr Singh says international students bring so much with them when they choose to study on the Gold Coast and play a very important role at Southern Cross.

“They bring international values, cultures and pedagogies which enable us to understand their needs and allows us to adapt to international pedagogies and prepare global citizens of the future,” he said.

“This enables us to work both locally and globally, both with preparing students for international careers and learning from international students as well.

“The increasing international number helps to bring a better culture of diversification to our campus and fosters long-term goodwill and international understanding between the Gold Coast community and the countries from which students originate.”

SCU Makes Top 100 in World Rankings
Southern Cross University further cemented its place as one of the city’s best universities recently after being named as one of the top 100 young universities in the world in the 2018 Times Higher Education Young University Rankings.

It has also outperformed many metropolitan universities in the federal government’s latest Quality Indicators for Learning and Teaching (QILT) data.

Acting Vice Chancellor, Professor Susan Nancarrow says the result demonstrates that regional universities deliver a crucial role in bringing quality education to regional Australia.

“Southern Cross graduates are reporting above-average starting salaries, high levels of satisfaction with our teaching quality, and a strong appreciation of the extra support that we make available,” Professor Nancarrow says.

“The dedication of our staff and the university’s commitment to engaging with employers and communities across regional Australia are resulting in outstanding independent ratings. More importantly, these ratings provide even more evidence that our programs deliver outstanding outcomes that are valued by graduates.”

Southern Cross was also ranked above the national average for teaching quality, student support and skills development in the latest QILT reports; that are drawn from surveys of student satisfaction. It was also ranked above the national average for both graduate satisfaction and median salaries for graduates.
